The Florida Sandhill
Crane is a threatened sub species that roosts and nests in Pasco County.
Night roost monitoring data implies an estimated population of 800 cranes in
Pasco. |
The Florida Scrub Jay is
a threatened species. Pasco County is the home of approximately
29
Scrub Jay families but they too are decreasing.

The Wood Stork is an
endangered species. West Pasco has a large
population of nesting Wood Stork in the spring.

The Short-tailed Hawk is one
the rarest hawks in the United States. Data has been gathered for the
past 9 years on a nesting pair found in West Pasco County. This
information was used to radio tag a young hawk in 2001.

A current on-going study is in progress
for the Werner-Boyce Salt Spring State Park. This information will be
used to develop trails and viewing areas for this rare bird and other
species.

The Green Key Funnel is a migration phenomenon found in 2001. To date over 20,000 warblers have been counted there yielding
26 warbler species |

Pasco County currently has 22 numbered
nest locations. With the possibility of the removal of the Bald
Eagle from the Endangered Species List, diligent monitoring will be
necessary for their well being.

The southeastern sub species of the
American Kestrel is a threatened species. It is a rare nester in Pasco
County with little data accumulated.

In
2005, thirteen wading bird roosts were found in the West Pasco
area. Monitoring these locations and searching for new sites
is an ongoing necessity for studying their status. |
